Your **Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)** represents the minimum amount of energy (in calories) your body needs to survive at complete rest. Even if you laid in bed all day without moving a single muscle, your body would still need these calories to power basic life-support systems, such as:

  • Inhaling and exhaling air through your respiratory system
  • Repairing and growing tissues and cells
  • Maintaining standard internal body temperature
  • Regulating hormones and metabolic functions

BMR Formulas Used by CalorieBlueprint

CalorieBlueprint employs the most accurate metabolism equations available to estimated BMR:

Mifflin-St Jeor Equation (Standard default)

Developed in 1990, it remains the medical standard for calculating calorie needs.

Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) + 5
Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) - 161

Katch-McArdle Formula (Fallback if body fat is provided)

If you input your body fat percentage, we calculate your BMR based on Lean Body Mass (LBM) instead of total weight. This is highly accurate for muscular athletes.

LBM = weight in kg × (1 - body fat % / 100)
BMR = 370 + (21.6 × LBM)
